* WHEREAS: Puerto Rico has recently voted to become a state during the June 11th, 2017 Plebiscite; and
2 WHEREAS: Puerto Rico has been a US Territory since 1898 and Puerto Ricans have served in the US military and prominent positions in US governments; and
3 WHEREAS: Puerto Rico’s status as a territory has hindered its ability to manage its debt and recover from Hurricane Maria; and
4 WHEREAS: Trade restrictions on Puerto Rico hinder economic development that would greatly benefit the island and its people; and
5 WHEREAS: The United States would only benefit from the cultural, intellectual efforts and energy of the Puerto Rican People as a part of the Union
6 THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED THAT: Puerto Rico be granted the status of statehood with all the rights and privileges that it entails.
